Volumetric Weight Explained: How Much Do Divisors 5000, 6000 and 8000 Really Differ?

Same carton, three divisors, three different bills. See exactly how volumetric weight works and how to pick a channel that does not punish bulky goods.

The Formula

Volumetric weight (kg) = L × W × H (cm) ÷ divisor

Air freight and express bill on the greater of actual vs volumetric weight — cabin space is the scarce resource, so bulky-but-light cargo pays for space, not weight.

What the Divisor Changes

Take one 50×40×30cm carton (actual weight 5kg):

DivisorVolumetric weightBilled weightDifference vs 5000
500012.0kg12kg—
600010.0kg10kg−17%
80007.5kg7.5kg−37%

The bigger the divisor, the friendlier it is to bulky goods.

Which Products Care Most

  • Pillows, plush toys, clothing in loose packing — volumetric weight can be 5-10x actual weight. A divisor-8000 line halves the bill versus 5000.
  • Dense goods (metal parts, books, canned food) — actual weight usually exceeds volumetric, so the divisor barely matters. Prioritize unit rate instead.
  • Economy postal — ignores volume entirely and bills actual weight only. The go-to for bulky, low-value, non-urgent goods.

Practical Tips

  1. Compress before packing: vacuum bags cut apparel volume dramatically.
  2. Right-size the carton: every 5cm of unused height adds billed weight on volumetric lines.
  3. Compare channels with the calculator — enter dimensions and it applies each line's divisor automatically.
