Shipping Battery Products to the US: Built-in, Accompanied and Standalone Compared

2026-10-25 · 4 min read · 239 views · JIUFENGYUAN Operations Team

Built-in lithium batteries ship with paperwork; standalone batteries are a different game. Know the three categories, the documents, and the packing that prevents rejection.

Three Categories, Three Sets of Rules

CategoryExamplesShipping rules
Built-in lithiumEarbuds, small appliancesBattery-accepted channels, UN38.3 + MSDS, ≈15% uplift
Accompanied lithiumSpare batteries shipped with a deviceStricter packing; batteries separated and protected
Standalone lithiumPower banks, spare cell packsMost limited — some channels refuse; dedicated battery line

The Paperwork

  1. UN38.3 test summary — issued by the battery manufacturer; ask for it before stocking a product.
  2. MSDS — describes chemistry (lithium-ion vs lithium-metal matters: metal cells face air restrictions).
  3. Correct labeling — the lithium battery mark on the carton, with the watt-hour rating where required.

Packing That Prevents Rejection

  • Power each device off, not standby.
  • Terminal protection on every battery: original retail packaging or non-conductive caps.
  • Cushion so devices cannot shift; one moving item in transit is how X-ray operators flag a carton.

Watt-Hour Rules of Thumb

Under 100Wh per battery is the broadest acceptance band — most consumer products qualify. 100-160Wh needs carrier approval. Above 160Wh is effectively cargo-freight territory.

Declare honestly and send documents with the first inquiry — we confirm channel acceptance before anything ships.
